Parental Support

"Parents are the primary educators of the faith. ...[The faith they teach] is, indeed, a Christian education more witnessed to than taught"

—General Directory for Catechesis

(Congregation for the Clergy)

As a parent, the influence you have on your child is profound. Most children view God through a parental lens and so it has been, most likely, many of your own attributes that have helped throughout the years to shape your child's understanding of our Lord.

At this time in their lives, however, your teen is beginning to develop a deeper understanding of life. This deeper development of who they are and of understanding the world around them is a wonderful time to nourish their faith lives, and to instill in them a practice of virtuous living that will allow them a guided means for growing into adulthood.

Although they will most likely still struggle with some of the same questions and curiosities of others their age, the virtues of a Christian life will help them show restraint in moments of temptation, forgiveness for times when strength of will was lacking, and hope in times that might otherwise seem filled with despair.

This won't be accomplished through monthly sessions preparing them for Confirmation. Rather, change such as this is only a result of lived experience on a day to day basis.

There are many simple ways in which you can hand on the faith to one another as a family that require no training of any kind.  Please take this time of preparation for your teen to consider what changes can be made to help your entire household strengthen one another in the faith.

"People learn from one another, just as iron sharpens iron." â€”Proverbs 27:17
